We all want crave success, right? But here’s the hard truth: chasing money and titles will make you lose your way. I’ve worked with some of the brightest minds in the world, and many of them fell into this exact trap. They chased wealth and power, and they got it. But now, their biggest question is, “What now?”
I once made two lists. One was full of people I thought would become the most impactful CEOs. The other? 18 current CEOs who had worked with me and actually made it. To my surprise, the two lists barely overlapped. Those who I thought would rise to the top? They fell for the Honey Trap of Money. They grabbed cash and titles, but today they’re stuck in a cycle of midlife crises, wondering, “What’s next?”
Meanwhile, the leaders who focused on growth, opportunities, and learning are on a different path. They didn’t chase quick money. Instead, they focused on becoming better leaders. And the rewards — money, status, all of it — came later, when it didn’t even matter anymore. Now, they’re not stuck wondering; they’re chasing their next big goal.
If you’re young and reading this, here’s my advice: Think carefully about what you’re really chasing.
I live by three rules:
If you don’t learn, you won’t earn.
If you don’t invest in yourself, you’ll have nothing to harvest.
If you don’t plan your life like a product, obsolescence will hit you faster than you think.
It’s sad how we measure success by money. But here’s the truth: Money? It’ll be spent, or worse, left behind unspent. But goodwill, impact, and the transformation you bring to others? That’s your real legacy. That’s what will outlast you. That’s what people will remember.
Chase the right goals, and let the rest chase you.
So, if you’re staring at an offer or a promotion that promises quick cash and a fancy title, ask yourself: Is this really what I’m after? Am I chasing the right goals? Because money might buy you things, but it won’t buy you purpose, growth, or legacy.
What are you really chasing?
